What is bauxite? It is the sole ore of aluminium (13th on the Periodic Table of Elements), the basis of a multi-billion-dollar-mining industry, and the second-most widely mined of all metal ores. Bauxite has a low Mohs hardness of 1.5-3.0, a dull, earthy luster, and low specific gravity of 2.0-2.5. Please be aware that this stone is not particularly suited to lapidary work. It can be somewhat crumbly when cutting, grinding or polishing as the matrix holding the pisolites (small round pebbles) is in many cases quite soft.
